Steve and Linda Schnettler are the owners of Mid-Michigan Fiberglass, Inc.  Located at 1809 27th St. in Portsmouth Township.  The business specializes in repair, refinishing, restoration and reconstruction of boats and personal watercraft.  Steve Schnettler founded the business at his home in Munger in 1990.

We employ two people who can work more efficiently these days in our new 6,000 square foot facility which was built in 1999.  The building replaces a 1,500 square foot structure that was built in our back yard when we first opened for business.  The new facility allows us to service any size trailerable boat - that's up to 50 feet long.

The new building includes a grinding room where fiberglass is ground down and laminated upon; a preparatory area where boats are taken apart, put together, cleaned and buffed; and a spray area where all paint is applied and refinishing occurs.

My expertise is color matching along with my brother, Mark, who has been a painter for 15 years and has been our service manager for the last five years.  Each color takes approximately half an hour to match and the colors are accurate on the first try 99% of the time.  The other 1% are matched over until perfect.

Our attention to detail has paid off in the form of increased boat traffic through the doors and increased sales in the past decade.

Our service has tripled since 1990 with an increase in dealer work and customer referrals.  We're currently repairing 15 to 20 boats per week compared with 3 to 5 boats per week in 1990.

I got started in the fiberglass industry at Tri-City Restoration, a Corvette restoration shop owned by my father, Ron, in Munger during the 1970s.

In 1983, I became owner of Tri-City Fiberglass at Brennan Marine in Bay City.  I did all of the fiberglass repair work for Brennan Marine and split the profits.  I moved to Bay Harbor Marina in 1987 to manage the fiberglass department there.

Three years later, Linda and I set out on our own.  Linda is our office manager.

During my time in the boat repair business, I have seen almost any type of repair imaginable.  We have repaired boats that hit buoys, rocks, breakwalls, other boats and even freighters.  We also repaired so many personal watercraft, that I invented and sell a lift (called a Sea Wench) that allows a PWC to be turned on its side for full access to the bottom.

I travel as far as Port Austin, Gladwin, Flint and Clare to bring boats in for repair, but we will accept boats from anywhere.  We also have a mobile unit set up especially for dockside repairs.
